Christine H. Barden: One of Alfred's newest piano authors and clinicians, Christine H. Barden is a co-author, with Gayle Kowalchyk and E.L. Lancaster, of Alfred's new preschool piano method, Music for Little Mozarts. Her published music with Alfred also includes several charming piano solos.
Ms. Barden grew up in a musical household; her mother was the concertmaster and her father was the principal cellist in the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra. The house was always filled with chamber music and concerts. Beginning piano studies at the age of four, Ms. Barden's teachers included Lea Ramsey, Lawrence Hahn and Dilworth Simmons. She graduated with a degree in Piano Performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied with Vladimir Brenner, piano soloist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Toscannini. She was one of the first Yamaha Music School teachers trained in the U.S. working with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. She spent four years studying, performing and teaching in Europe.
In the United States, Ms. Barden was the national chief instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System. During her 17 years as a national staff member with Yamaha, her responsibilities included Director of Curriculum and Chief Instructor. She has written many children's compositions that have been used nationally and is an internationally respected clinician on the subject of early childhood music.
Ms. Barden has two children, Allison and Noah Hicks, and currently teaches in Anaheim, California, where she lives with her husband, Bob Barden.
