Catherine Rollin: Bio

Catherine Rollin is a pianist, composer, clinician and teacher of prize-winning students. Her more than 200 published pedagogical compositions are recognized worldwide for their combination of musicality and “teachability.”  In demand as a clinician, Catherine has given over 150 workshops including a seven city tour of Japan in 2006.  Many of Catherine’s workshops feature her insights into technique that demystify the skills necessary to play artistically and with physical confidence. These insights were initially presented in her well known series, Pathways to Artistry. Catherine has also presented masterclasses in Japan, Canada and throughout the U.S.

Rollin received her principle training with Mischa Kottler, a disciple of von Sauer and Cortot.  Catherine’s early interest in Baroque performance practice led her to study harpsichord for two summers while still in high school with the world renowned harpsichordist, Dorothy Lane at Northwestern University.   Rollin holds the BMA degree with distinction from U. of Michigan and the MM from Oakland U. In 2002, the latter awarded her their Alumni Achievement Award.

Among her many national and international presentations, Catherine has been featured in sessions at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) 2006 conference as well as sessions sponsored by the Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Utah, South Carolina, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania, and Texas Music Teachers Associations.  Additionally, she has been featured at a wide variety of prestigious piano institutes including the National Piano Teacher Institute (NPTI), Pedagogy Saturdays (Westminster Choir College), National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP) and the Goshen Piano Teachers Workshop.

Catherine Rollin was featured in both the April 2005 and April 2006 issues of Clavier Magazine.  She has also been commissioned by CLAVIER MAGAZINE.  She has received numerous other commissions from state associations and various other festivals and teacher organizations. Her music is featured on required lists in Canada and  Japan and in the U.S.  Many of her works have been featured in the NFMC Festival Bulletin in solo, duet and concerto categories.

Catherine Rollin's students have won numerous awards at the state and national levels. One of her piano students was honored to be among seven national finalists in the MTNA Junior High School Performance Competition in 2004.  That student also won the first prize award at the 2007 Seoul, Korea Performing Arts H.S. auditions.  Another student was the youngest semi-finalist to make it to the second round of the Oberlin Piano Competition in the summer of 2006 and was also a semi-finalist at the IIYM in both 2005 and 2008.  Her students have been first place winners at all three levels of the performance competition sponsored by the MMTA (Michigan Music Teachers Association) including a first place high school winner in the 2007 MMTA competition, and two first place winners (intermediate and junior) in the 2008 competition.  Her students have been featured on numerous occasions at the state convention of MMTA as well as by the Steinway Society.  They have also been featured with several orchestras including
the Ft. Worth Chamber Orchestra, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Warren Symphony and the Pontiac-Oakland Symphony.
